Located in Hudswell, just a short walk from Richmond, the George & Dragon has been commended for its panoramic views over the Swale Valley, as well as its fantastic range of local beers. The annual competition run by CAMRA considers the community facilities, as well as the overall atmosphere and quality of the establishments.

The George & Dragon’s large beer terrace and 2010 refurbishment were just two of the factors that landed it in a top spot, with CAMRA applauding its on-site library, shop, allotments, and use of Yorkshire breweries when evaluating.

The pub faced closure back in 2008, however was saved when residents pooled together to purchase the pub and relaunched it as a co-operative. Since then, the pub has offered fantastic facilities for the community – and even won the top spot on CAMRA’s best pubs list back in 2017. Speaking of it’s 2017 win, Paul Ainsworth, CAMRA’s Pub of the Year Finalist Coordinator said:

“The George & Dragon is a great example of how a pub has been resurrected as a true community asset.”

And it’s just that community touch that has it still lingering in the top four, three years since its win.

Topping the list this year was The Bell Inn in Aldworth, Berkshire, which won based on its homely and welcoming atmosphere, as well as its community touches and 250 year heritage.

Other runners up included the Red Lion in Preston and the Swan With Two Necks in Pendleton.
