Announcing the news in a statement, the park has confirmed the 22-year-old bear had unexpectedly “taken ill” earlier yesterday, before vets diagnosed him with terminal kidney failure.

The statement read: “Victor was a great ambassador for his species, inspiring generations and drawing attention to the plight of his species in the wild and the threat of climate change. He will be greatly missed by everyone.”

Victor spent his later years enjoying the scenic surrounds at the Doncaster park, which is one of the largest polar bear reserves in the world. He also shared the space with four other polar bears during his time at the zoo.

Polar bears can live up to the age of 30 years, with most adults averaging between 20-25 years.
