A ‘chippy tea’ is Britain’s most iconic meal. Moreso than a Full English or a Sunday Roast. And although it may be one that isn’t as popular as it once was due to rising prices. It’s still Britain’s favourite dish and the best thing about it for me is that every person in every town across the country has their favourite chippy. And, when we cover pieces like this, I love that people share their favourite – making these lists seem arbitrary. But, I still like them as they cause discussion and debate, which shows the passion for a good chippy still lives.
I like this list as it comes from the author of the award-shortlisted book ‘Food of the Cod’s’, Daniel Gray, who shares some of the best from across the country. And, we are going to share below some of the Yorkshire fish & chip shops named.

The Wetherby Whaler, Otley Road, Guiseley
Writing about the ‘chain of Whalers’, he writes: “All of them serve batter that soothes the soul and chips that throw the eater to some blissful childhood occasion. The Guiseley branch is victorious here due to its history – this was the site on which the legendary Harry Ramsden opened his first fish and chip hut.”
The Fisherman’s Wife, Leeds Market, Leeds
Next on the list is The Fisherman’s Wife, writing that the “Leeds Market venue mentioned moves to the rhythms of its venue – don’t expect to find it frying beyond 5pm… Make sure you accompany your velvety haddock with a portion of scraps”.
The Scrap Box, Hull Road, Dunnington, York
Writing about the chippy on the outskirts of York, oen we drive by almost everyday, and have yet to visit he writes: “The Scrap Box is where the locals go. This is a bright, modern business rooted in old chippy values: sumptuous batter; steaming, crispy yet tender chips; homemade mushy peas in snooker-baize green and lush tartare sauce. And, of course, scraps.”
