When you think of great fish and chips, the Yorkshire coast immediately springs to mind with its traditional seafronts, tiny seaside towns and proper British chippies dotted along the front and around every corner. One of the greatest seasides Yorkshire has to offer is undoubtedly Whitby, so it comes as no surprise when we hear that one of the town’s chippies has been named in the top 5 in the UK.
Taking the fourth position on the list, The Fisherman’s Wife has been recognised in the prestigious National Fish & Chip Awards, hosted by public body Seafish who support the UK seafood industry. The awards recognise “outstanding” restaurants in the UK, hunting down the best places serving “incredible fish and chips” and providing excellent service.
The restaurant has been commended for going “above and beyond”, sourcing sustainable ingredients for their dishes, providing excellent staff training and career opportunities, and providing “innovative” menus with options for those with specific dietary requirements.
Marcus Coleman, Chief Executive at Seafish, has said:
“Fish and chips is the undisputed champion of iconic UK food, and these five businesses are offering the highest quality dining experience that money can buy. Huge congratulations to them and make sure you secure yourself a table at one of the shortlisted establishments … so you can try their fabulous food for yourself.”
The Fisherman’s Wife is a local favourite, with tourists and residents alike regularly visiting to enjoy their traditional fish and chips and varied menu. The seafront restaurant serves up an extensive menu of Iceland and Norway sourced fish, from cod and chips and fishcakes to lobster and halibut.
The only surprise on the list is that the restaurant is the only one that features from Yorkshire, full list outlined below:
