It’s no secret that Yorkshire is a pretty special place. And sure, we probably wouldn’t go as far as to say that us Northern folk are particularly romantic (especially here in Yorkshire), but our landscape surely is.
Consisting of rolling hills and the mysterious moorland that even played the backdrop to romance novel Wuthering Heights, our region has a lot to offer. But what caught Last Minute Cottages eye, in particular, was our clear, starry nights.
Rank the locations on a number of factors to decide the ‘most romantic places to stargaze’, Last Minute Cottages used data from the International Dark Sky Association, as well as internal property information on holiday homes with a hot tub, within a 30-minute drive of a Dark Sky Reserve.
And naturally, Yorkshire ranked pretty well on the list – not only cutting the top five, but actually ranking twice.
Looking at factors such as whether holiday cottages had little light pollution and, of course, a private hot tub on the property, Last Minute Cottages determined Bodmin Moor in Cornwall the best place to stay for a bitta romance, with North York Moors taking the top spot for those who fancied a chance at spotting the Northern Lights.
The Yorkshire Dales, of course, made the cut, too, thank both Yorkshire National Parks actually officially being named Dark Sky Reserves list just one year ago.
Here’s the list in full:
- Bodmin Moor
- Brecon Beacons National Park
- Elan Village
- Snowdonia National Park
- North York Moors National Park
- Exmoor National Park
- Cairngorms National Park
- Yorkshire Dales National Park
- Cranborne Chase
- South Downs

“So, to help UK holiday-makers find the perfect getaway this winter, we decided to create a ranking of the best spots in Britain for stargazing, without catching a chill!
“We hope that anyone looking to detox in some of the most beautiful landscapes Britain has to offer can use our list to plan their next staycation”.
