These days, if you’re heading to a pub for a pint and some scran, you want more for your money. And Yorkshire has plenty of pubs where you can sit down and enjoy some fantastic food.
There’s nothing better than a beautiful pub serving up a great pint and proper grub. We love a packet of scampi fries with a beer, but sometimes you’re looking for something more substantial. Pubs are taking note, with more seasonal, fresh produce appearing on menus and some incredible dishes being served up.
From city pubs where you can escape the hustle and bustle to hidden gems tucked away in the countryside, we’ve picked out a few of our favourites that we’ve visited and think deserve a place on any list of the best pubs in Yorkshire serving up fantastic food.
1. House of Trembling Madness
Lendal, York
In the shadows of York Minster, House of Trembling Madness is a former Georgian mansion, with so many charming rooms, you could really get lost here for a few hours. The building holds so much history, the walls practically whisper at this point, and we have it on good authority it’s “absolutely haunted”. But aside from things that go bump in the night, it’s also home to a pretty incredible menu of food – in particular their Killer Sarnies – a collection of hot ciabatta sarnies, one of which is packed full of beef and served with a pot of gravy. Everything else is just as Northern, from their hearty stews, to buckets of roasties.

2. The Craven Arms
Appletreewick
A highly popular pub in the Yorkshire Dales, The Craven Arms is your quintessential Dales pub – covered in Virginia creeper, locals supping on tipples outside or playing darts inside, with beautiful Dales surrounding the tiny village of Appletreewick. Inside is just as traditional, with little nooks and crannies at every turn to hunker down with a pint and a pie. Chef Mikael Paylor loves to cook up new twists in the kitchen, too, so we recommend trying something new every visit.

3. The Abbey Inn
Byland
The Abbey Inn fast became a flagship destination for pub grub in Yorkshire – the first more casual venture for Tommy Banks following The Black Swan at Oldstead and Roots York Michelin successes. Banks’ portfolio has grown to include Knaresborough’s General Tarleton, too, however, The Abbey Inn remains a must-visit in its own right, with signature dishes including their burger (loved by the late Dave Myers), pies and nationally renowned Sunday roast. With Byland Abbey itself looming over the pub, it’s a special spot indeed.

4. The Grantley Arms
Grantley
A relatively new addition to the Yorkshire food scene, Grantley Arms opened just last year after bringing the stunning village just stone’s throw from Grantley Hall back to life. Expect upmarket yet traditional pub vibes, with a classic-yet-elevated menu including Yorkshire coast fish and chips, burgers and classic pies. In this gorgeous setting, you’ll want to sit and soak up the atmosphere all night long.

5. The Lister Arms
Malham
Forever one of our favourite pubs in Yorkshire, The Lister Arms has it all. Roaring fire, real ale, Yorkshire hospitality and proper pub grub. Many an hour has been sat in the corner by the fire supping through the roster of Thwaites ales on cask here, best accompanied by their beloved steak and ale pie.
If you’re yet to try this season’s venison wellington, you’re in for a treat, too. Expect classic pub food with a slightly elevated twist – all in the shadow of the breathtaking Malham Cove.

6. Fylingdales Inn
Fylingdales
Although this coastal pub has been a local favourite for years, it’s recently entered a new chapter. The owners remain the same, but the venue has had a fresh new look and a renewed focus on its food offering. Local chef George Husband is leading the kitchen, putting a modern spin on traditional pub favourites.
Expect creative small plates, upgraded pub snacks and impressive Sunday roasts, alongside plenty more to tempt your taste buds. And while it might be close to the route to Robin Hood’s Bay, this is somewhere worth making a special trip for in its own right.
