Centuries-Old Historic Charter Fair Set To Return To Yorkshire Seaside Town

The dates and opening times for the Bridlington Autumn Charter Funfair have been confirmed, with the event returning to its usual spot at Moorfield Road Car Park from 16 to 20 October. This traditional fair, which has drawn crowds for centuries, is one of the oldest Charter Fairs in the UK, having been established by Charter in 1446, according to the National Fairground and Circus Archive.

Last year, thousands of visitors flocked to the seaside town to enjoy the festivities, which remain a popular draw for both locals and tourists. Bridlington’s charming coastal location adds to the funfair’s appeal, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the town’s famous beaches and promenade alongside the historic fair.

At the opening ceremony, the Fair Bells, once owned by the late James Robinson, will be rung to mark the start of one of Bridlington’s longest-running events. With its roots stretching back over 500 years, the fair remains a cherished tradition, combining the excitement of rides and games with the timeless allure of Bridlington’s seaside charm. This year’s event promises to continue the legacy of fun and community spirit.

The Bridlington Echo reported that the Yorkshire Section of the Great Britain Showmen’s Guild spokesman for Bridlington Funfair John Breeze said: “We are extremely pleased to be coming back to Bridlington and back on to the usual site at Moorfield Car Park.”

“There will be plenty of large rides and a big choice of adult and juvenile rides, plus the usual array of prize stalls, including refreshment stalls, food and drink – plus the usual traditions such as brandy snap and candy floss.

”The official opening of the Funfair will take place at 5pm on Wednesday 16 October, with the Mayor, other dignitaries and members of the Showmen’s Guild in attendance. As is tradition each ride that the Mayor has a turn on is also open for locals to ride.
