A lover of all things Roman? Then you won’t want to miss out on the return of this York city festival that returns for 2025. You can step back in time and gain an insight into what it was like all the way back when the city brings to life its Roman past.
The historic city of York is once again set to step back in time for the Eboracum Roman Festival 2025. Celebrating the city’s right Roman heritage, the festival will run from Monday 19 May to Saturday 31 May with a packed programme of events for families and history buffs to enjoy.

The event is organised by the York Museum Trust in partnership with York Minster, York Archaeology, the University of York and the York Civic Trust, the festival attracts crowds from across the UK and beyond, all eager to immerse themselves in York’s ancient past.
One of the standout events of the festival is the Roman military parade, taking place on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25. Re-enactors in full Roman attire will march from Museum Gardens to York Minster, offering a dramatic and authentic display of Roman military life. Organisers say the parade gives spectators a sense of just how imposing a Roman legion would have been as it made its way to the site of the original Roman fortress.
Kathryn Blacker, Chief Executive of York Museums Trust, described the festival as “a packed, family-focused programme during the May half-term holiday,”, York Press reports.
Back at Museum Gardens, guests can enjoy live history displays, including appearances by a Roman fortune teller, light-hearted storytelling sessions, and drill activities for children, where aspiring young soldiers can see if they have what it takes to join the Roman ranks.
