One of North Yorkshire’s prominent leisure companies has been selected as the preferred operator for Scarborough’s Alpamare Waterpark. Flamingo Land, based near Malton, is now collaborating with council officers to finalise terms to reopen the attraction in time for this summer’s core tourism season. North Yorkshire Council officially named Flamingo Land as the preferred operator today.
The council’s executive members made the decision on Tuesday, May 21, after a three-week search for potential operators. Flamingo Land has committed to opening the park this summer and will review operating costs and plans for the winter season in November.
North Yorkshire Council took possession of the site last December after Benchmark Leisure Ltd, the previous tenant, went into administration. With a short-term operator now in place, the council will begin working on a long-term solution for the waterpark’s future.
North Yorkshire Council’s deputy leader, Cllr Gareth Dadd, expressed enthusiasm about the decision: “We are delighted to announce Flamingo Land as our preferred operator. Our goal was to find an experienced operator to reopen the park for the summer season. Alpamare is a key attraction on Scarborough’s North Bay and significantly contributes to our tourism sector. We look forward to collaborating with a well-established, local operator.”
Gordon Gibb, Flamingo Land’s chief executive and owner, shared his excitement: “This new venture is an exciting challenge for us at Flamingo Land. We are committed to reopening Alpamare to the public in July.”
In an interview with the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Kerry Metcalfe, North Yorkshire Council’s Assistant Director for Property Services, stated, “We are actively working with Alpamare and Flamingo Land to prepare the water park for its reopening at the end of July.”
The £14m park, located off Burniston Road, opened in 2016 and is as much fun for the adults as it is for the kids. With a fully licensed bar, infinity pool, and amazing spa facilities, it is the perfect day out for all the family.
Alpamare in Scarborough has a gigantic wave pool where you can enjoy diving around in the water if you’re feeling brave. Outside, it has a fantastic warm outdoor garden pool to play in. You can enjoy a four-man tube ride on the fast and furious Snow Storm and Black Run. Or try out the double-tube Olympic Run and the fast-paced twisting Cresta Run.
