The Oldest Most Magical Tourist Attraction Is Right Here In Yorkshire

The award-winning tourist attraction Mother Shipton’s Cave in Knaresborough is situated along the River Nidd, is England’s oldest tourist attraction dating back to 1630. The landmark takes you on a mile-long journey into the past through the picturesque historic woodland.

Along the way, you’ll encounter the unique phenomenon that is the Petrified Well and Mother Shipton’s Cave, the birthplace of the famous Yorkshire Prophetess.

Over hundreds of years, people have been mesmerised by the magical well. Cascading water turns everyday objects to stone – as if by magic.

Throughout your journey, you and your kids will learn about the story of Mother Shipton and the Petrified Well through enchanting stories and discoveries along the woodland trail.

Set in the unspoiled remnants of the Royal Forest of Knaresborough, the park’s natural beauty and her story will have you mesmerised.

People have travelled from all over the world to hear her unique tale for hundreds of years. Born in 1488, Ursula Sontheil, also known as Mother Shipton, grew up in Knaresborough and was said to have been where the famous Yorkshire Prophetess was born in the cave in the woods.

The Petrifying Well, England’s oldest visitor attraction is the centre piece of Mother Shipton’s Cave in Knaresborough. And it is said to hold magical properties. As well as turning objects into stone, an old tradition is to make a wish, of which the water will grant.

You can visit the museum and see a life-size figure of Mother Shipton herself, as well as historic and valuable items such as Queen Mary’s shoes from when she visited back in 1923.

As well as the magical tale, children can visit the incredible adventure playground whilst mums and dads enjoy a well-earned brew and maybe a picnic on the park benches. Ice creams and refreshments are available to purchase from our vintage tea vans, and there are toilets on site.
