Set in the unspoilt remnants of the Royal Forest of Knaresborough, the park’s natural beauty and her story will have you mesmerised. People have travelled from all over the world to hear her unique tale for hundreds of years. Born in 1488, Ursula Sontheil, also known as Mother Shipton, grew up in Knaresborough and was said to have been where the famous Yorkshire Prophetess was born in the cave in the woods.
The Petrifying Well, England’s oldest visitor attractions, is said to hold magical properties. As well as turning objects into stone, an old tradition is to make a wish, of which the water will grant. You can visit the museum and see a life-size figure of Mother Shipton herself, as well as historic and valuable items such as Queen Mary’s shoe from when she visited back in 1923.
As well as the magical tale, children can visit the incredible adventure playground whilst mums and dads enjoy a well-earned brew and maybe a picnic on the park benches. Ice creams and refreshments are available to purchase from our vintage tea vans, and there are toilets on site.
