The people behind Valhalla York, a popular Viking-themed pub, have opened a new venue on Whitby’s Grape Lane called House of Mëmento Möri. And, if it’s anything like its sister pub, it’s sure to be a massive hit.
The owners launched Valhalla in York nine years ago, and it’s been a huge success, with continued growth. Now, they’ve opened their second venue in Whitby, a town they couldn’t resist when the property came onto the market.
It’s a stunning Grade II-listed Georgian building with a beautiful cellar, which has undergone a long transformation to become House of Mëmento Möri.
The owners said: “Well, to put it plainly, we give our customers and friends places with unique interiors, places that have a meaning, all with a historical nod. Oh, and you won’t find anything but the likes of Led Zeppelin, Motörhead and Iron Maiden playing.
“We push to be as friendly as you’re likely to find. So in Whitby, like in York, please bring along the kids, and your four-legged friend if you’d like.”
Why Memento Mori?
Well, it’s Latin and its literal meaning is ‘Remember Death’, which you’d be forgiven for thinking is a bit macabre. But that’s missing the point.
The whole purpose of the ideology of Memento Mori is to never lose sight of the fact that time is valuable and you should live a full and good life. So, under the perhaps dark exterior is something very profound and enlightening.
That pairs well with Whitby and, of course, what we do.
House of Mëmento Möri opened at 6 Grape Lane, Whitby, on Friday, September 25. The owners said: “We hope we’ve done the people of Whitby proud and we hope the people that come through our door like what we’ve done!”
