Paul Heaton Names His Favourite Fish & Chip Shop In Hull

Paul Heaton has a love affair with Hull that runs deep. Although not from the East Yorkshire city, he moved there and stayed for 20 years. He was the frontman for two huge UK bands, The Housemartins and The Beautiful South, penning massive hits for both. Now, his favourite fish & chip shop in Hull has been revealed.

Heaton, whose career spans over four decades, is known for classic pop songs like “Happy Hour,” “Song For Whoever,” “Perfect 10,” and many more. He has a lot of nods to Hull in his music, with one album named London 0 – Hull 4. In his latest social media post, he asked his audience what their favourite fish & chips were while promoting his newest release called Fish ‘N’ Chip Supper.

He revealed his own favourite spot in Hull for fish & chips, saying: “Hello, I’m Paul Heaton & I want to know what your favourite chip shop is in the whole country. Mine, personally, is probably Chris’ Fish Bar in Turnham Green if I’m down south.”

He continued, mentioning Hull’s “Cave Street Fisheries, if it’s still open.” The chippy in question is indeed still open and prides itself on cooking the best fish and chips. Not only is it open, but it’s also an award-winning fish & chip shop, winning the title of best fish & chip shop in 2023.

And if Paul Heaton is giving you a name check, you must be doing something right, especially in a city that prides itself on its fish & chips and is the home to chip spice and, of course, the pattie.

Paul Heaton played Glastonbury at the weekend to great reviews. He performed classics such as “Caravan of Love” and, of course, The Housemartins classic “Happy Hour,” where he was joined on stage by ex-band member Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, who accompanied Paul on bass.

We don’t know about you, but we’ll definitely be heading down to Cave Street Fisheries to give it a try for ourselves after Paul Heaton’s recommendation. Ours is a fish & chips with curry sauce and a load of chip spice, please. And maybe a pattie on the side, as it is Hull after all.
