Yorkshire’s coastline is so varied and stunning that each village you find along its long stretch offers a different experience, but all take in a rugged coastline overlooking the North Sea. From North Yorkshire to the East Yorkshire coast, the county is home to some of the prettiest seaside villages in Yorkshire, with old-fashioned cottages, stunning scenery and peaceful spots that can transport you to a new headspace.
If you’re looking to visit one of the prettiest villages on the Yorkshire coast, we’ve got you covered for your next trip. From charming fishing villages and sandy beaches to dramatic cliffs and coastal walks, these are some of the best Yorkshire coastal villages to add to your next trip.
Robin Hood’s Bay

Found below Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay is a quaint fishing village filled with old fishermen’s cottages. We aren’t exaggerating when we say it feels like stepping back in time as you make your way down the steep hill. You can enjoy a walk to either Boggle Hole or Whitby, and as a reward for your efforts, head to one of the village’s many pubs. Our favourite has to be the Laurel Inn, but each has its own quirks, helping to make it one of the prettiest villages on the Yorkshire coast.
If you’d like to stay there, Hotel Victoria sits at the top of the hill, while many of the cottages down in the village are available as holiday lets.
Staithes

Found along the North Yorkshire coast, there will never be a list of the best coastal villages in Yorkshire that Staithes doesn’t top for us. It is simply perfect. As you head towards it along the Cleveland Way, you’re greeted by a view that has changed little over the years. Its cobbled, narrow streets and red-roofed cottages give the village a timeless feel.
A popular spot with photographers, this North York Moors village is near Whitby and is home to a small sandy beach. It is also part of the Dinosaur Coast, making it a popular spot for fossil hunters. With its historic cottages, winding streets and beautiful coastline, it’s easy to see why Staithes is one of the most-loved Yorkshire coastal villages.
Runswick Bay

This tiny but stunning North Yorkshire coastal village is located just eight miles from Whitby. It’s an idyllic spot, with red-roofed cottages, colourful fishing boats and houses that appear to cling to the cliff edge. The village is also a fantastic base for coastal walks, with beautiful views at almost every turn.
And then there’s the beach. It’s so good that it has picked up several awards, including the Sunday Times’ Beach of the Year in 2020 and the Seaside Awards in 2026. You can spend the day swimming, hunting for fossils, fishing, building sandcastles or simply walking along the shore, with the chance of spotting seals. The beach is also dog-friendly, so your four-legged friend can join you.
Sandsend

Sandsend is another of Yorkshire’s prettiest coastal villages, sitting just above Whitby. It has beautiful views of Whitby Abbey and a lovely stretch of beach, with a stream running through the village and out to sea. There are fantastic restaurants and cafés, a village shop and a couple of pubs where you can enjoy a few ales.
We highly recommend the fish tacos from The Fish Cottage & Mary’s for a sarnie, where you can enjoy your food with views of the coast from the outdoor seating area. Sandsend is much quieter than some of its busier neighbours, with a huge stretch of beach to explore. It’s also part of the Cleveland Way, making it a fantastic spot for coastal walks.
Flamborough

Flamborough is one of the most spectacular spots on the East Yorkshire coast, with dramatic white cliffs, hidden beaches, sea caves and stunning views across the North Sea. Flamborough Head is a particular highlight, home to the iconic lighthouse, which was built in 1806. You can stop here to take in the views, learn more about its maritime history and grab a bite to eat at the Flamborough Lighthouse Café. You can even take a tour inside the lighthouse, climbing the 119 steps to the top for panoramic views of the coastline.
For walkers, the coast around Flamborough is just as impressive. The route from Flamborough Head towards North Landing and Thornwick Nab takes you past secluded beaches, caves and natural arches, with spectacular sea views along the way. It’s an ideal place to experience the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire coast and one of our favourite areas for a coastal walk.
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful seaside escape, a scenic coastal walk or somewhere to enjoy a traditional Yorkshire pub, these prettiest villages on the Yorkshire coast are well worth exploring. Each has its own character, but together they showcase everything that makes the Yorkshire coast so special.
