Talk about making use of what’s local. The Chippie in Hawes has created a unique treat in the form of a delightful twist to traditional fish and chips: deep-fried Wensleydale cheese. Located in the heart of Yorkshire Dales, this chippy has become a destination for food enthusiasts seeking a crispy, gooey treat.
Upon learning about this intriguing dish, we were compelled to make the journey to Hawes to sample it firsthand. Although the fish at The Chippie looked tempting with its crispy golden coating, our focus was firmly on this distinct Yorkshire specialty.
Imagine a generous portion of Wensleydale cheese, enveloped in a light batter and fried to a golden perfection. The result is a delectable combination of crispy exterior and a meltingly gooey interior bursting with flavour. What’s even more impressive is that the Wensleydale Creamery, where this cheese is produced, is conveniently located nearby, making the dish even more authentic.

While we initially ordered the deep-fried Wensleydale cheese out of curiosity and novelty, it quickly surpassed our expectations. In fact, it ranks among the best dishes we’ve ever tasted at a chippy. Who would have thought that Wensleydale cheese could complement fish and chips so harmoniously?

One thing to note is that due to the cheese’s melting nature, the patty tends to lose its shape easily. However, this only added to the dish’s charm, as it was perfect for savouring with a side of chips.
