The North Yorkshire coast has some of the best beaches in the UK. Whitby, Scarborough, and Filey are all places that come to mind when we think of the best beaches in Yorkshire. While these are all wonderful places to visit, they are very popular and can get very busy, especially on a sunny day. But what if you want somewhere that’s peaceful, tranquil, and more hidden away? Well, let us introduce you to Cattersty Sands.
You will find Cattersty Sands, also known as Skinningrove Beach, nestled below Skinningrove village on the North Yorkshire coast, around halfway between Whitby and Hartlepool. The famous 109-mile Cleveland Way National Trail passes above the beach, so if you are taking the challenge, make sure this is one of your stop-offs.
A Seaside Paradise Away from the Crowds

Among dramatic, rugged green cliffs, it offers incredible sea views and expansive stretches of white sand. Also, without the amusements, rows of beach huts, and arcades, Cattersty Sands remains beautifully unspoilt, giving it a peaceful atmosphere. It is perfect if you want to feel like you’re a world away from the crowds and busyness of modern life.
Cattersty Sands also has a rich history, as the area was long associated with iron ore mining. A concrete jetty intersects the beach. It was built in 1886 and was used to load steamboats carrying iron ore to Middlesbrough. These days it serves as a reminder of the area’s industrial past but gives you the chance to enjoy stunning views out across the North Sea.
Fun Galore All Year Round

There are plenty of things to do on the beach. On those warm days (or cold ones if you’re brave), you can go for a dip in the sea. The vast sandy beaches and lack of crowds make it perfect for relaxing, building sandcastles with the kids, or enjoying a picnic. When it is at low tide, you’ll find rock pools emerge around the bay, which are great opportunities for children to explore marine life. Also, if you’re lucky, you might find fossils as you walk along the beach.
If you are a wildlife lover, then Cattersty Sands is for you. The North Yorkshire coast is a hotspot for attracting various seabirds, making it popular with birdwatchers. So make sure you bring some binoculars. There have also been sightings of bottlenose dolphins passing through the water. Oh, and the beach is dog-friendly all year round, so your pooch can run freely and enjoy the beach.
Cattersty Sands is a wonderful location on the North Yorkshire coast if you want some peace away from the crowds. This beautiful part of the world offers a perfect day out, whether you are a lone traveller, in a couple, or bringing the family. Add Cattersty Sands to your bucket list on your next Yorkshire adventure.
