The Family Experience Where You Can Hunt For Gems & Explore Caves In Yorkshire

Whether it’s that point of the summer holidays when the kids are getting bothersome or just a regular Saturday in August, you’re probably looking for something to do with the family. And thankfully at the Yorkshireman HQ, we’re never short of recommendations. Enter, Stump Cross Caverns.

Situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, the incredible tourist destination is so much more than just a cave – with tons of activities to keep kids and big kids alike entertained.

One of the few places where you can enjoy gem panning in the UK, Stump Cross Caverns is home to its very own gem sluice, where guests can hunt through mining rough to find real precious gems that they can take home to keep.

Pretty gems such as rose quartz and amethyst can be found when panning, making for a fun and easy activity that everyone can take part in.

In addition to the gem sluice, kids can also enjoy a fossil dig with Cave Woman herself, where the young ones are taught all about rocks, how Yorkshire came to be, and how fossils are made (while even getting to make their own fossil to take home).

The activities are fantastic accompaniments to the real star of the show, the caverns, which guests can explore underground at their leisure, uncovering the hundreds of stalactites and stalagmites.

Guests can explore the caverns twice during their visit, not only seeing them in all of their beautiful glory in warm show-lighting but also in the dark after 3pm as part of the UV experience, with just ultraviolet torches to see the incredible details of the caves.

Under the UV lights, the calcite glows neon, making for the most amazing photos.

All the experiences highlighted above can be enjoyed as part of the Discovery Day, with family tickets starting at just £42 for 1x adult and 1x child, and £84 for 2x adults and 2x children.
