When you think of York, you think of cobbled streets, old-fashioned pubs serving real ale and a walk around the walls. Beyond that is a city full of surprises and down one of its many small side streets is this unassuming cheese shop serving the most oozy, gooey cheesy street food you could want. The quaint shop is filled with all sorts of cheeses to purchase – but we were there to sample its menu.
The Cheese Trader is nestled in the shadows of York minster on the cobbled streets of the picturesque Grape Lane – and is the definition of a hidden gem. Selling a wide variety of handpicked cheeses from diaries across the UK specialising in bringing the highest quality regional produce to the historic city as well as some EU favourites.
From the outside with its vibrant yellow colour, this independent shop is a real asset of York – with a story to tell and true pride put into the work. It’s what makes us proud of celebrating the city’s offerings when we find these little spots that are screaming out to be celebrated.

They have a small build-your-own style street food offering and on our visit, we indulged in their posh cheese on toast and their cheesy dirty fries and both went down an absolute treat. Guests can choose a main dish, and then select all the different types of cheeses they’d like on top Alongside an array of other toppings.
Both of which were absolutely smothered in gorgeous melted cheddar. We even chose a whole camembert to top our fries, which were so tasty, like a cheesy salt and pepper dish. The posh cheese toast was some of the best toast we’ve ever had, with so many amazing flavours that perfectly paired with the cheese.
