This Yorkshire Chippy Has Been Named In Top 10 Best In UK For 2026

You can’t beat a chippy tea – and with it nearing the end of January, some of you might be thinking about throwing that new diet out the window and nipping down to your local and getting one of each. And, we wouldn’t blame you. Not with the weather that we’ve had in the longest month of the year. Kick the year off right with the Fry Awards 2026 as they announce the 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways and 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants for 2026.

The prestigious awards highlight operators that consistently deliver exceptional quality, service and value. Results follow months of rigorous judging, with takeaways, restaurants and mobile units secretly assessed by mystery diners. Each business was scored across a wide range of criteria, including food quality, cleanliness, staff knowledge, value for money, ease of ordering and even social media presence.

Only the very highest-scoring operators receive an award, making the Fry Awards one of the industry’s most sought-after accolades. This year’s standards were particularly demanding, with a 97% pass mark required for takeaways and 96% for restaurants. Impressively, several businesses achieved a perfect 100% score.

Now in its 14th year, the awards once again showcased the incredible standard of fish and chip shops nationwide. Mystery diner feedback praised everything from freshly prepared food to excellent teamwork and service. Comments included: “The food was piping hot and had obviously been freshly prepared,” “Customer service was excellent,” and “Beautiful, succulent fish with lovely golden chips.”

A great load of Yorkshire chippies have made the top 50, but one of God’s Own made it into the top 10. Among those recognised in the Top 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants was Trenchers of Whitby, flying the flag for Yorkshire and cementing Whitby’s reputation as one of the UK’s fish and chip capitals.

Reece Head, competition organiser, said: “Congratulations to this year’s Fry Award winners. Over the past 12 months, operators have faced significant challenges, including rising wage costs, higher energy bills and exceptional pressure on fish prices. Despite this, they’ve maintained consistently high standards, supported their teams and kept customers informed as changes were needed.

“That commitment was evident to our mystery judges and is what secured each business a place among the UK’s leading fish and chip shops. Exceptionally high pass marks of 96% and 97% demonstrate just how high standards are across the industry. Their success proves that our nation’s favourite takeaway remains nutritious, great value and stronger than ever.”

With Yorkshire once again shining on the national stage, the Fry Awards 2026 prove that when it comes to fish and chips, Britain is still doing it better than anyone else.
