Time Out has revealed its latest list of the UK’s coolest neighbourhoods, and one of Yorkshire’s own has made the cut. Time Out has published its latest guide to the world’s coolest neighbourhoods, its annual list celebrating the planet’s most exciting spots. These include places with booming dining scenes, thriving local businesses and a plethora of cultural offerings, from nightlife and theatre to art and shopping.
And because the UK is so cool, Time Out has created its own list celebrating the country’s trendiest neighbourhoods. One of Yorkshire’s own has made the cut, with the magazine’s regional contributors naming their coolest locales across Britain.
Crookes, in Sheffield, has been highlighted by Daniel Dylan Wray, taking sixth place in Time Out’s list of the 11 coolest neighbourhoods in the UK. It’s somewhere we didn’t have on our radar at all, which makes it all the more exciting. Having lived in Sheffield over a decade ago, it’s interesting to hear how much the neighbourhood has developed in recent years.
Wray describes Crookes as a ‘wonderfully self-contained neighbourhood that is now a go-to food and drink hotspot’. Much like Sheffield itself, he says, it’s not ‘flashy or fussy’, but a place that packs a punch despite being an under-the-radar residential area.

Sheffield has always had a soft spot in my heart. When I lived there years ago, it felt like a hub for creatives, with great foodie spots, bars and art all colliding in a wonderful mix against the city’s industrial backdrop.
What can you do in Crookes?
In its guide to the perfect day in Crookes, Time Out highlights a host of independent food and drink spots, green spaces and cultural attractions.
For food lovers, there’s Paesani, serving amazing pizza, and Made in Sicily, a Sicilian deli. The guide also recommends No Name, described as one of Sheffield’s best restaurants, and Two Sheds, a micropub that’s ideal for relaxing with a drink.
If you fancy a walk, Weston Park is a great place to start. Just outside Crookes, its beautiful grounds are home to a free museum and gallery. You can then loop around Crookes Valley Park before exploring the neighbourhood’s independent cafés, bakeries and shops.
For those who want to take in the views, Time Out also recommends heading to Bole Hills, where you can enjoy sweeping panoramas of Sheffield and the nearby Peak District.
