York’s Historic Luxury Hotel Named ‘Hotel Of The Year’

One of York’s most luxurious hotels has been named Hotel of the Year, marking a huge milestone in the hotel’s 150-year history. Located next to York Station, The Milner York, a Grade II-listed hotel, has long been an important asset in the historic city’s cultural landscape. And, the accolade is a testament to the £2 million rebrand from its transformation as it was previously The Principle York.

The four-star hotel has gained the award given by  RBH Hospitality Management due to delivering exceptional results across commercial performance, guest experience, and team engagement. It’s received strong guest feedback across multiple platforms showcasing the hardwork that has been instilled in the 200-strong team.

The MIler York is not reseting on its laurels as it has huge redevelopment plans underway which is sure to enhance the hotels exisiting 155 befores, 11 meeting rooms and event spaces, York Press reports.

We were invited for a preview of The Principal Hotel’s new chapter as The Milner back in 2024 and we thought that the stunning Victorian landmark in York that had been thoughtfully rebranded to honour its railway heritage. Named after York Station’s WWII foreman, William Milner — who famously risked his life to save others during the war — the hotel blends rich history with timeless elegance.

Inside, guests are welcomed by grand décor and a striking iron staircase, echoing the opulence visitors would have experienced in the late 1800s. The beautifully restored hotel is home to 155 rooms and suites, alongside a garden room, restaurant, and bar, where guests can enjoy everything from afternoon tea to an evening grill menu featuring classics like ribs, burgers, and steak, as well as indulgent desserts and a wide selection of wines and craft beers. With dog-friendly rooms available, it’s the perfect base for exploring York with your four-legged companion — a truly stunning stay steeped in history.

Andy Barnsdale, general manager at The Milner York, commented: “This award feels particularly special because of the journey our team has been on, and it feels fantastic to be recognised by RBH Hospitality Management. Over the past year, we have reimagined not just the hotel, but the culture behind it, creating an environment where our people feel empowered, valued and inspired to deliver truly exceptional experiences.

“To be named Hotel of the Year is incredibly rewarding because it reflects every part of our business, from commercial performance and guest satisfaction to the passion and commitment shown by our team every single day. We are immensely proud of what has been achieved and excited for what comes next as we continue to build on this momentum.”
