York’s Smallest Pub Has Been Named Pub Of The Year

York’s smallest pub, The Blue Bell on Fossgate has been named ‘Pub of the Year’ beating out 450 pubs in the York CAMRA branch area. One of York’s best pubs, the tiny spot is full of charm and is everything you want from a proper pub, of which the numebrs are dwindling. In what is such a hard time for the hospitality industry, these little moments of celebration are a great way to show appreciations that go into the behind the scenes of these local businesses.

Run by, John Pybus for the last ten years, The Blue Bell with wife Katie, has been awarded the honour which highlights their hardwork in running the ancient pub. John will go down in history with the rest of the pubs landlords. Pubs are a part of the countries heritage and as improtant to our culture gathering places where people gather and socialise. Gems like this need protecting at all costs.

The little pub also brews its own House IPA with Brass Castle of Malton and is home to six casks on the bar all brewed in Yorkshire. What more could you ask for?

The Blue Bell was established back in 1798, and was last decorated in 1903, retaining all of its Edwardian charm. Stepping into the pub, is stepping back in time and appreciating all the history that has taken place around this beautiful little boozer.

York Press reports, that York CAMRA Branch chairman Chris Tregellis said: “Our 1100 members take the selection of our best pub very seriously but in a way it was an easy choice: easy because this is a well known and loved local landmark.

“Once inside you never fail to slip into interesting conversations with appreciative customers, easy because (landlord)John has done an exceptional job in building upon the traditions of the pub and finally easy because of the range and quality of its cask beers.”

“York branch is fortunate to have a rich selection of excellent pubs both in the city and beyond and this year the Blue Bell rings loud and clear.”
