Saltburn’s iconic Cliff Tramway has topped the list of the most popular seaside attractions in the UK beating out some stiff competition.
The Seaside heritage Networks first ever annual top ten Bucket and Spade list named the attraction number one. As its the oldest water-balanced cliff funicular still in operation in Great Britain and second oldest in the world – it’s fair enough.
The iconic Saltburn attraction beat out the likes of Blackpool Tower and Morecambe Winter Gardens to be named number one.
The award was voted for by members of the public and highlights how much value these unique features of seaside towns have for both tourism and for the locals as well.
The Cliff Tramway has such an authentic feel to it from the outfits the staff wear to the carriages with their stained glass windows that take you up and down the steep cliffside.

Deputy leader and cabinet member for climate change, environment and culture, Cllr Carrie Richardson said: “This latest award for the Cliff Tramway comes hot on the heels of it receiving the accolade of being among the top 10% of listings on TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards.
“Both awards are a clear recognition of the hard work and dedication of the team who provide a great experience for visitors and how highly regarded this charming seaside attraction is by locals and visitors to the area. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote for the Cliff Tramway to beat off some really strong opposition.”
Also featuring on the list was Scarborough’s South Cliff Gardens, which came in a respectable 7th place. What Yorkshire seaside experiences could feature next year? Bridlington’s The Yorkshire Belle maybe?
