Yorkshire Coast Spot Named In Top 20 Britain’s Most Beautiful Seaside Villages

The Yorkshire Coast is home to some of the quaintest villages and beaches in the country (if we do say so ourselves), and it seems The Telegraph agrees. The newspaper has included one of North Yorkshire’s own in its list of the 20 Most Beautiful Seaside Villages in Britain.

Runswick Bay, a charming village nestled between Whitby and Staithes, has been praised for being “the cutest in Yorkshire”. With its rich coastal heritage, the Yorkshire coast boasts everything from sweeping sandy beaches to hidden fossils and even its own chalk cliffs. It’s no wonder the British seaside holds such appeal, and the smaller villages dotted along “God’s Own Country” offer a refreshing alternative to more crowded seaside destinations.

In its feature, The Telegraph highlighted Runswick Bay’s “small, close-knit community, the same old Royal Hotel pub, and a few traditional coble boats moored up”. The village’s unspoilt charm and slow pace of life make it a perfect escape.

Not only is the village itself delightful, but its beach is equally impressive. The newspaper wrote: “And still the same gob-smacking swathe of sand, dotted with rock pools and backed by Jurassic cliffs where benevolent goblins allegedly lurk.” Fossil hunters will be pleased to know it’s also a popular spot for finding prehistoric treasures.

Runswick Bay has an interesting history too. The original village was rebuilt in 1682 following a devastating landslide. Today, the cottages cling to the cliffside, many of which were once fishermen’s homes, though many are now holiday lets. Due to the narrow streets, visitors are advised to travel by bus or on foot, particularly via the scenic Cleveland Way National Trail.
