Then there’s the beach! This is definitely one of the best beaches in Yorkshire (if not the UK). It is the ideal place to spend a summer’s day and has something for everyone. If you are looking for activities, then you’re in luck. You can:

  • Swim in the Sea
  • Hunt for Fossils
  • Explore Hob Holes (these are small caves where hobgolins are supposed to live)
  • Water Ski
  • Sail
  • Fish
  • Explore Rock Pools
  • Build Sandcastles
  • Spot Seals

The list is endless. However, if you just want to relax, then the beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll and a picnic. It is also dog-friendly, so you can bring your favourite pooch. Don’t just take our word for it; the beach has quite the trophy cabinet. The awards include the 2026 Seaside Award and Sunday Times’ Beach of the Year 2020.

Plenty of Great Food and Drink Spots

If after a day filled with walking and activities, you start feeling peckish or in need of a good pint, then there are plenty of wonderful spots in the village. One of the most popular is the Runswick Bay Hotel. Just a 5-minute walk from the beach, they offer a wide menu featuring locally sourced produce, including classics such as mussels, fish and chips, and steak and ale pie. They also offer a great range of local ales.

If you want something lighter, then check out Runswick Bay Tea Garden. This charming family-run cafe, tucked away at the top of the cliff, is a peaceful haven set in a garden complete with a waterfall and small pond. They serve wonderful homemade food including cakes, sandwiches, and toasties.

A Fascinating History

The Yorkshire Coast village also has a fascinating history and has gone through many changes over the years. The most dramatic period was its destruction by a landslide in 1682, leaving just one remaining house. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the disaster, but it did mean the village had to be rebuilt. Legend has it that during the landslide, the entire village was at a wake for a recently deceased villager. With a large dose of irony, it was the deceased man’s house which was the lone house to survive.

So, whether you have a relaxing day at the beach or a fun-filled experience with activities galore, this stunning North Yorkshire Coast village is the perfect place to be. A trip to Runswick Bay will leave you with memories and experiences that will last forever.
