It’s no secret that Yorkshire folk love a good chippy. The Friday night chippy tea is a thing of beauty – and with that in mind, it’s not surprising that a whole range of Yorkshire fish and chip shops have featured heavily in Fry Awards’ best fish and chip takeaway list.

Sending their people to dine out across the UK and secretly assess each outlet, the awards assess 40 aspects of each business, looking at things like quality, staff presentation, front-of-house hygiene and customer service skills to name a few.
And although the shop itself is important, the food is the main focus and ratings are made on factors such as the flakiness of the fish, crispiness of chips, the crunch of batter and value for money.

It’s a prestigious award for chippies nationwide as they need to hit a 96% pass rate of the assessed factors (much higher than any previous years). So if you are after some ridiculously great chips for this Friday night, we have the answer for you right here.
Reece Head, the competition organiser, comments: “Announcing our award winners couldn’t come at a better time. The industry is going through a stage of uncertainty with coronavirus impacting the lives and incomes of thousands of shops and owners. This is just the news we need to lift the industry so that those that are still trading can tell their customers immediately, while those that are closed have something exciting to shout about when their doors open again.
“Our award winners are all at the top of their game and are moving with the times, embracing technology such as contactless payments, online ordering, and click and collect and delivery while still ensuring the food they are serving is top quality and the customer service is second to none.”
Famous chippies such as The Magpie Cafe in Whitby, of course, made the cut – with an array of other Yorkshire chippies meeting all criteria.
