We love a bit of train travel. Watching the world fly by as you’re transported across picturesque countryside, through towns and cities, is a real thrill. And, if you enjoy it as much as us, you’ll be excited to know that passengers can travel on one of the UK’s most beautiful railway journeys for just £1.50 this year.

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Settle-Carlisle line, which traverses the Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales, and Cumbria, a series of events is being organised. Northern is celebrating by offering thousands of £1.50 tickets to customers travelling the route in the coming months.

The train route covers 72 miles, includes 14 tunnels, and more than 20 viaducts and was opened back in May 1876. And, it is popular as ever as Northern reported that almost 1 million passengers journeyed on the line in 2025. Its highest since the pandemic. Details about how customers can grab these will soon be announced.

Aside from this deal, Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company will be running a chartered train between Carlisle and York on Monday, 25th May. Departing Carlisle at around 7:45pm, it’ll travel south through the countryside with stops at Appleby, Settle and Skipton before arriving in York.

It’ll take in Yorkshire’s view, such as the Yorkshire Three Peaks and the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct. Once arrive in York, passengers can explore the historic city before rejoining the steam train and returning to Carlisle at 10:10pm.

Pete Myers, chair of the Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company, said: “The Settle-Carlisle line is unique, connecting communities from Yorkshire through to Cumbria and also providing a sustainable and beautiful way for visitors to explore the Yorkshire Dales, Westmorland Dales and Lake District.
