Sheffield University has reported that almost 500 students have tested positive for Coronavirus, according to an online tracker on the university website. 474 students and five staff members have tested positive for the virus as of 28th September.

A spokesperson for the university has said, “We recognise how difficult it is for students who are new to Sheffield and need to self-isolate because of Covid-19 cases. To make sure we are supporting students in the best way possible, we will contact all students who are self-isolating to check on their welfare and offer practical and emotional support.”
As it stands, there are no student accommodation blocks in lockdown at the moment, but students that have presented positive are said to be self-isolating. The current rate of coronavirus in Sheffield for the seven days up to October 1st stands at 233.3 new cases per 100,000 people.

The university currently has 8,000 staff members and around 29,000 students. The news comes as fears grow over potential tightened restrictions in Sheffield, after 300 Covid-19 cases were recorded in a single day.
