This Lovely Yorkshire Pub Was The UK’s First Ever Gastropub

The Angel at Hetton is widely known as the original gastropub in the UK. The traditional inn has origins all the way back to the 15th century, which means it has hundreds of years of dining and drinking history, and it’s managed to keep a welcoming atmosphere and a reputation as one of the best dining spots in the UK all this time.

Set in the stunning Yorkshire Dales in North Yorkshire, the Angel at Hetton is steeped in history, and, as well as serving up some fine ales, it is known for its impeccable Michelin star rated dishes that feel more like works of art thanks to their thoughtful and colourful presentation.

Created with seasonal, local produce, every dish is a total treat at the Angel, with an upmarket, British approach to every plate that’s made.

From the outside, the venue has a distinct look with its sandstone coloured stone-built walls – which are synonymous with the Dales area. As you enter the venue, its stunning ivy-clad walls emulate the beauty of their dishes perfectly.

The Angel Inn at Hetton has become famous for its award-winning food and its warm, welcoming atmosphere which has maintained a strong bond with the locals – as well as those who travel from all over the world. Michael Wignall, the Michelin-starred chef, arrived in 2018 and cemented the oldest gastropub in the UK on the culinary map.

With his wife Johanna, and James and Josephine Wellock, Wignall put into action a bold and ambitious plan to create a unique dining experience, that has made the Angel a must-visit destination in itself.

Although the Angel at Hetton is not your traditional pub, the dedicated restaurant area has kept the spirit and image of a good old alehouse. Boasting modern, contemporary decor that puts the focus on the food, the Michelin Star spot is a really special venue, serving up French cuisine crafted by chef Wignall and his team.

There, you can enjoy locally sourced meats, fish, veggies and more, with unique flavour blends that are sure to incite a second visit. Tuck into the likes of Nidderdale Lamb, Scottish Scallops and Norfolk Quail, before enjoying some very British puds to cleanse the palate.

While visiting, you can also stay in one of the fifteen en-suite bedrooms that are individually designed and decorated. They can be found across from the restaurant and provide magnificent views over Rylstone Fell, as well as containing all the creature comforts you’d expect from a luxury stay.

It’s definitely more of a treat, but if you’re spending a weekend away with your significant other, we’d recommend pushing the boat out for this one.
