Finally, an air date has been announced for everyone’s favourite fishing show, the BBC’s Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. The comedic pair return for their ninth series, taking viewers on another journey across Britain’s beautiful countryside as they try to catch a variety of fish.
The destinations in this series have personal significance for either Paul or Bob, allowing them to delve into memories of their past and share their experiences. The show first aired in 2018 and has become a place where conversations about life and death are prevalent, due in part to both presenters experiencing heart-related health difficulties.
Themes of ageing, friendship, family and personal challenges are discussed, and, of course, there is fishing in stunning locations. Paul is the more experienced angler, but by the ninth series, you’d expect Bob to have learnt a few things.
In the first episode of the new series Paul and Bob are joined by terrier Ted, sadly for the final time, to fish the River Ribble in Lancashire. They are hoping to catch barbel, and Ted hopes to taste Bob’s hotpot.
One poignant aspect of this series is that it will be the last to feature the show’s much-loved third wheel, Ted the Patterdale Terrier. The characterful dog sadly died at the age of 13 earlier this year, but the BBC confirmed that he had already filmed an appearance for the forthcoming ninth series.
Mortimer also paid tribute to Ted, saying at the time: “So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much… and away boss.”
Whitehouse added: “Bye bye Ted old friend. He wasn’t a dog, he was a species all of his own. He’s gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you mate.”
Series nine of Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing is listed as returning to BBC Two on Sunday 25 October 2026, according to the BBC episode guide. The BBC has yet to be independently verified as the source of the exact broadcast date.
