Iconic Yorkshireman Sir Patrick Stewart Gets Honoured From Hometown

One of Yorkshire’s most famous exports, Sir Patrick Stewart, has received a special honour from the area where he grew up. Born and raised in Mirfield, the celebrated Yorkshireman was granted the Freedom of Kirklees, along with two other distinguished individuals.

Sir Patrick received the honour during a ceremony at Huddersfield Town Hall, appearing via video link from his home in California, BBC reports. He expressed his gratitude, saying it was “an extraordinary privilege. Awards and award ceremonies are part of our life in showbiz and can be fun and entertaining—but nothing will ever mean as much to me as the Freedom of Kirklees does.”

The actor’s illustrious career spans over six decades and includes a diverse array of roles that highlight his remarkable talent and versatility. From portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the iconic television series Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994) to bringing Professor Charles Xavier to life in the X-Men film series, along with his acclaimed stage career, Sir Patrick has left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.

Alongside Patrick Stewart, another iconic Yorkshireman, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, also received the award. Armitage described the honour as an “incredible privilege… I see it as an acknowledgement of my work and my loyalty to this part of the world.” He humorously added that, instead of being allowed to drive sheep through the town centre as the honour historically permitted, he might now enjoy the perk of free parking.

Charity fundraiser Joan Gorton was the third recipient of the honour at the ceremony. Mrs Gorton, along with her late husband, Tony, established the Huddersfield branch of Epilepsy Action, raising thousands of pounds to support the charity’s vital work.
