Two Yorkshire Spots Named In Best Fish & Chips In The UK

I bloomin’ love a chippy tea. And you don’t get better than Yorkshire Coast fish & chips — that’s just a fact. Time Out magazine seems to agree, naming two of Yorkshire’s finest among the top 70 fish & chip restaurants in the UK for 2025. And what’s more — they’re both located in the same seaside town that sees thousands flock to it all year round.

It seems it’s not only Dracula who enjoys nipping down from his home at Whitby Abbey for a few chips, as the travel magazine has included Whitby’s two most popular chippies in its list of the best. Whitby is arguably the most popular seaside spot on the Yorkshire Coast, so we’re not surprised it made the cut.

The first to be named is The Magpie Café, which the writer says “is widely and rightly known as one of the best places to eat fish and chips in the UK,” highlighting its “no frills, all gills at this spot that tenderly overlooks Whitby harbour.”

The second Whitby spot to be featured is Trenchers. Regular visitors to the town are often divided over which of the two is better, with many firmly in one camp or the other. Writing about Trenchers, the reviewer says it “has set itself out as one of the must-visit places from that region,” praising the fish as “all delicate and flaky (well-protected by its bronzed batter armour), while the gloriously chunky chips have more in common with a fluffy roastie than a crispy French fry.”

We’ve not actually tried Trenchers ourselves, but can vouch for The Magpie — it’s top-notch. Situated right on the harbour, it’s perfectly placed for a post-lunch walk to try and work off some of those fish & chips… because let’s be honest, the portion sizes are generous to say the least.
