A small, quaint South Yorkshire village with a population of approximately 1,500 people has hit the headlines recently for a highly unusual reason. Wentworth near Rotherham has been dubbed the title of Britain’s ‘strictest’ village.
The village and its residents are so passionately determined to maintain its beauty and traditional character that they have become renowned for enforcing the most stringent conservation rules. Overseen by the Fitzwilliam Wentworth Amenity Trust, these rules include forbidding takeaways, supermarkets, or flashing neon signs.
Also, every front door in the village must be a specific colour – ‘Wentworth Green’ (also known as Hollybush Green). Gates and drainpipes also need to be this colour, while window frames need to be painted off-white. The majority of the buildings’ external walls are made of local sandstone, and any alterations must be approved by the trust.
Plenty of Rules but Lots of Fun to be Had!
There is plenty to see and do in the village. You can visit the impressive 19th-century Grade II-listed Holy Trinity Church. It is open to the public during daytime hours, and tours can be arranged on request. You won’t be able to miss it as its 200-foot spire is visible for miles around.
One of the biggest attractions in the village is the Grade I-listed Wentworth Woodhouse. This 18th-century stately home was constructed for the 1st Marquess of Rockingham around 1725. It stands on 87 acres of grounds and gardens, including lakes and a deer park. It is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday.
Perfect Place for Foodies
While there are hardline rules around no fast food or takeaways, you definitely won’t go hungry after exploring the village. There are plenty of wonderful (and very traditional) places to eat and drink, including:
- Rockingham Arms – This picturesque rural pub was built in the 19th century. It is, of course, built with the sandstone you’ll find in the rest of the village. They offer up pints of real ale enjoyed inside or in the beer garden with countryside views. You also find pub classics such as hand-battered fish and chips, curries, and steak.
- The George and Dragon – The pub has been proudly serving the local community since 1804. They serve hearty food, traditional ales, and always guarantee you a warm Yorkshire welcome. There is always something going on, from live music to quiz evenings to charity motorbike rallies; it really is the place to be in the village.
- The Village Tearoom and Gardens – ‘We don’t sell fast food, we only sell good food as fast as we can’ is the motto of this charming village tearoom. They are certainly not wrong! They serve a variety of delicious homemade cakes and savoury items such as paninis and sandwiches. You can also indulge in an afternoon tea experience including scones with jam and clotted cream, and an array of tempting savouries.
While these strict rules may seem a little extreme to many of us, they have ensured that Wentworth remains a picturesque and idyllic English village. It offers an escape from the modern world, allowing you to step back in time and enjoy one of Yorkshire’s most beautiful places.
