Channel 4’s ‘Yorkshire By The Sea’ Puts Whitby’s Hidden Distillery In The Spotlight

The second episode of Yorkshire By The Sea aired last night on Channel 4, and it didn’t disappoint. Showcasing the Whitby rum and gin distillery, a family-run hotel in Scarborough, and Filey, we were treated to more beautiful shots of the wonderful Yorkshire Coast while learning about the folk who work there.

Created by True North, a production company based in Leeds and Manchester, the show was praised by viewers for capturing the beauty of the Yorkshire Coast, which illustrates why the county is called “God’s Own Country.” It had all the warmth and feel-good viewing brought on by Yorkshire folk.

This week’s episode highlights included the Whitby Distillery, a gin and rum distillery run by Jessica Slater and Luke Pentith, who founded it in 2017. The episode showcased how they craft their coastal spirits, showing the couple working with SeaGrown, a seaweed farm based in Scarborough, helping them farm a certain type of seaweed to use in their distillery along Filey Beach.

Viewers were particularly taken with the bottles, with one person writing: “Loving those glass bottles used for the gin and rum from the distillery in Whitby.” The bottle is designed to resemble the texture of the sea, which is a lovely little touch. The knowledge they had and the love for the product and the aired was captured beautifully in the programme.

We witnessed them creating a dark spiced rum (which happens to be a favourite of mine) using Madeira wine casks, linking it to Whitby’s history where ships would stop there. The Whitby RNLI Dark Spiced Rum honours the courage of RNLI volunteers. Plus, 10% of every bottle sale is donated to the RNLI.

Elsewhere in the programme, Weston Hotel in Scarborough, run by a couple, was highlighted, featuring stunning sea views of the coast from the rooms. The famous Armed Forces Day was a busy one for the couple. We fancied staying for the breakfast alone, which looked absolutely fabulous. The episode highlighted how important the hotel business is to Scarborough, and seeing an independently run hotel was really exciting for us at The Yorkshireman.
