The first episode of Channel 4’s Yorkshire By The Sea aired last night to a positive response. Viewers were taken to meet a family of fishers in Bridlington, a boatbuilder in Whitby, the iconic Bempton Cliffs nature reserve, and Scarborough, which featured Scarborough Spa and sea swimmers who brave the cold waters of the North Sea.
The show was praised by viewers and captured the beauty of the Yorkshire Coast, which illustrates why the county is called “God’s Own Country.” It had all the warmth and feel-good viewing brought on by Yorkshire folk, taking inspiration perhaps from Channel 5’s love of a good ol’ Yorkshire show.

Highlights of the episode included the Robson family, fisherman Neil, and his kids—well, adult children. We see beautiful shots of the seaside town of Whitby as they pick up their boat, the Genesis Rose. Neil remarks, “It was alright until they started answering back. I don’t know how I really got on in life without them, because, apparently, I do everything wrong.”
The four-part series Yorkshire By The Sea delves into the lives of people working and living along the coast, telling stories of everyday heroes and communities. As Britain’s most popular tourist destination, the series will not only look into the beaches, buckets, and spades but also follow locals who strive to earn a living on the county’s coast, highlighting its seaside towns as well as the shifting sands of Spurn Point.

Commissioner of the series, Jasper Hone, said: “This beautiful series will showcase the breathtaking landscape of the Yorkshire coastline, but also show how communities are facing – and tackling – the impact of the climate crisis in their daily lives.”
Executive producer for True North, Christian Hills, said: “We’re clearly biased, but this series combines the most glorious coastal landscape with the warmth and wit of genuine Yorkshire characters, telling their fascinating stories in their own words.”
You can catch up on the first episode here. The next episode airs on Channel 4 at 8pm next Monday.
