“I don’t wanna be a pie – I don’t like gravy!” – said every school kid over and over again upon the 2000 release of hit stop-animation, Chicken Run. It’s been 22 years since then, with no sight of a sequel – until now.
Announcing just today – after originally confirming they’d acquired the distribution rights to Chicken Run 2 last summer, Netflix has revealed that fans can expect a sequel in 2023, with Ginger, Rocky and a number of other beloved characters returning for the new adventure.
And while it’s likely that Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha will not return, Netflix has announced a number of big names for the film – including Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi and Bella Ramsey.
Revealing the sequel’s title and cast on social media today, Netflix said: “The CHICKEN RUN sequel is coming, and it’s called… CHICKEN RUN: DAWN OF THE NUGGET. Hatching only on Netflix in 2023.
“Starring Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi & Bella Ramsey, DAWN OF THE NUGGET revisits your favourite chickens Ginger and Rocky, plus a whole coop of new friends.”
Peter Lord and Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park will return at the helm for the sequel, bringing their iconic clay stop-motion animation that can be seen in not only Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, but Shaun the Sheep and Flushed Away.
The new film will follow Ginger and Rocky, alongside new daughter Molly, who face danger once again when the whole of chicken-kind faces a new threat.
