ITV has unveiled first-look images of the upcoming true crime drama series titled The Long Shadow ,centered around the relentless five-year pursuit of serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, commonly known as The Yorkshire Ripper.

The investigation, spanning from October 1975 to January 1981, engaged over a thousand officers and fundamentally reshaped the approach of British law enforcement.

Based on Michael Bilton’s acclaimed book “Wicked Beyond Belief,” published by William Collins, the seven-part series promises a fresh perspective focusing on the victims and the dedicated officers of the serial killer. The network has recently shared the first images of the show and announced the impressive all-star cast, adding to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming release.

The Long Shadow is distinctive for its focus on the victims, their families, and the survivors, introducing a fresh viewpoint to a well-documented narrative. At the core of the series, Jill Halfpenny, known for her role in “EastEnders,” will portray Doreen Hill, the mother of 20-year-old student Jacqueline Hill, Sutcliffe’s final victim.

Jacqueline was brutally murdered and discovered on deserted grounds in Leeds in November 1980. The series sheds light on the unfortunate events leading to Jacqueline’s demise.

During the pursuit of her killer, the investigation mistakenly veered towards a North East suspect, prompted by the notorious Wearside Jack tapes.

The accomplished 48-year-old actress, Jill Halfpenny, joins a constellation of talents in The Long Shadow.

Notably, Toby Jones takes on the pivotal role of DCS Dennis Hoban, the initial leader of the inquiry, while David Morrissey portrays DCS George Oldfield, who notably assumed command of the case.

Supporting the ensemble, the cast includes Lee Ingleby, recognized for his role in “The Hunt For Raoul Moat,” as DCS Jim Hobson, and Katherine Kelly, a familiar face from “Coronation Street,” who embodies victim Emily Jackson. Daniel Mays completes the roster, portraying Emily’s husband Sydney Jackson.

In this composition of talents, The Long Shadow offers a riveting portrayal of the intricate investigation and the lives that were forever altered by the unfolding events.

ITV’s The Long Shadow will air on ITV1 and ITVx September 2023.
