If you’re craving misty moors, winding country lanes, close-knit communities and plenty of animals, there’s something wonderfully Yorkshire about settling down with a good countryside watch as autumn draws in. From cosy farming tales and familiar village faces to gritty Yorkshire classics and sweeping landscapes, these six films and TV shows capture that unmistakable Yorkshire feeling.
1. All Creatures Great & Small
The new series began on Channel 5 on Thursday 17th September and will air weekly. Naturally, we’re chewing at the bit waiting to see how Tricki Woo is getting on. Filming took place earlier this year in Grassington and the wider Yorkshire Dales, with Grassington the official home of Channel 5’s Darrowby.
In the new series, James is excited about new developments in veterinary medicine, but a new vet in the area threatens the status quo. The world at large may be changing, but inside this slice of Yorkshire, the Dales will always offer the same perfect escapism. Packed with warmth, humour and community spirit, the series brings more heartwarming tales of people and animals alike. Watch via My5 here.
2. The Yorkshire Vet
The Yorkshire Vet is a highlight of Channel 5. Series 23 is currently airing on Channel 5, making it perfect viewing for an autumn evening. The wholesome show follows Peter Wright, Julian Norton and the rest of the gang, with familiar faces including Mr and Mrs Green popping up in the first episode.
It’s also known that Peter Wright was initially under the supervision of none other than All Creatures Great and Small author James Herriot, aka Alf Wight.
With its mix of beautiful Yorkshire countryside, farming life, animals and the everyday characters who make up the county’s rural communities, The Yorkshire Vet is an easy one to settle down with as the nights draw in. Watch via My5 here.
3. Our Great Yorkshire Life
Channel 5 show Our Great Yorkshire Life is returning to our screens for a third series this week. The series started in 2022 and showcases all that Yorkshire has to offer, with some familiar faces along the way, including Our Yorkshire Farm’s Reuben Owen.
Filmed last year, the brand-new series is created by Daisybeck Studios, the team behind Fletchers on the Farm, and aims to showcase all the area has to offer, from its remarkable residents to its cultural heritage. The new series of Our Great Yorkshire Life returns to our screens this month on Channel 5.
It follows ordinary Yorkshire folk who live and work in some of the most picturesque and breathtaking parts of the county, alongside some familiar faces, giving viewers a chance to explore more of the people, places and stories that make Yorkshire what it is. Watch via My5 here.
4. God’s Own Country
And finally, God’s Own Country is another film that puts the Yorkshire landscape front and centre. The 2017 drama follows young sheep farmer Johnny Saxby, whose life on the family farm in West Yorkshire begins to change when Romanian farm worker Gheorghe arrives to help during lambing season.
The film was shot around Silsden and Keighley, with Haworth and Otley also featuring as locations. Its sweeping countryside, stone buildings and rugged Yorkshire landscape make it particularly atmospheric as an autumn watch.
It’s a much more grown-up and serious watch than All Creatures Great & Small, but if you’re looking for something that captures the harsher, wilder side of the Yorkshire countryside, it’s well worth adding to the list. Watch via ITVX here.
5. Sam & Ade Go Birdin
For something a little gentler, Sam & Ade Go Birding is a lovely choice for an autumn watch. The series follows comedians Sam West and Ade Edmondson as they explore some of the UK’s most beautiful landscapes in search of birds, meeting local wildlife experts and fellow enthusiasts along the way. Series 2 of Sam & Ade Go Birding is due to air on Channel 5 from Thursday 1 October 2026 at 7pm.
With plenty of countryside, wildlife and good-natured humour, it has that perfect slow-paced feel for a crisp autumn afternoon. And while it isn’t exclusively Yorkshire-focused, the show’s appreciation for Britain’s wild places makes it a natural addition to a countryside-inspired watchlist. Watch via My5 here.
6. Brassed Off
Grimley Colliery Brass band, in existence for a hundred years. With the closing of the mines in the Northern town, life looks bleak for both the band and the workers. This endearing comedy stands the test of time and Postlethwaite’s famous speech still resonates as much as it did when it was first written. Watch for free on Channel 4 here.
So whether you’re after gentle countryside escapism, farming life, classic Yorkshire cinema or a dose of misty moorland, there’s plenty here to settle down with as the nights get longer.
