British food often seems to be an acquired taste, with much of the world struggling to understand our love for all things beige and battered. From pies and puddings to fried delicacies, our traditional dishes might not always win global acclaim—but they certainly hold a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many Brits.
However, not everyone is convinced. TasteAtlas, a website dedicated to cataloguing global cuisines, recently conducted a survey based on 600,000 responses to determine the 62 worst dishes in England—and, perhaps unsurprisingly, four Yorkshire favourites made the list.
Among them was the British burrito in 25th place, created by James Dempsey of Long Can Hall in Halifax. This Yorkshire pudding wrap, an English take on a Mexican burrito, has sparked plenty of debate over the years.

Coming in at 33rd place was the Scotch egg, a deep-fried snack that actually originated in the Whitby area of Yorkshire in the late 19th century. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough’s parmo, a beloved chicken-and-cheese dish dating back to the 1950s, landed at 59th place.

Rounding out Yorkshire’s appearances on the list was Bettys Tea Room’s Fat Rascal, which took 62nd place. This traditional Yorkshire cake, made from shortcrust pastry leftovers, mixed dried fruit, butter, and sugar, is a favourite at the iconic tea rooms—but seemingly not among TasteAtlas voters!

While some of these rankings may ruffle a few feathers in Yorkshire, one thing is for certain—love them or hate them, these dishes are undeniably part of the region’s rich culinary heritage.
