So, the fact the two chippies featured in the top 10 in the UK are in Whitby comes as no surprise.
The two Whitby fish & chips shops are iconic in the seaside town, Trenchers and The Magpie Cafe and featured in the top 10 fish and chips in the UK, according to the Fry Magazine, who listed the top 50 fish & chips shops in the UK with the awards in its 12th year.
The Magpie Cafe, a firm favourite of Yorkshire Chef, James Martin, is one of Whitby and Yorkshire’s most famous chippies, and Trenchers is a favourite with locals and visitors alike. Either are both rammed most times of year with queues out the door in the warmer months.
Speaking about the list Fry Magazine said: “The UK’s 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways and 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants follow months of mystery dining in which judges visited establishments unannounced, meticulously inspecting elements, including food quality, premises cleanliness, staff expertise, value for money, ease of ordering, and social media presence.

“Shops can achieve 100% if they score top marks on every section of the mystery dining, but takeaways had to achieve at least 95.5% or over to win an award while restaurants needed a score of 95% or higher to claim their well-deserved accolade.
