If there wasn’t already enough reason to visit the World of James Herriot in Thirsk, its new Heartbeat exhibition opens at the end of this month and will be unveiled by one of the show’s stars.
Legendary barmaid Gina Ward, played by actress, Tricia Penrose, recently took over the famous pub, The Goathland Hotel known as Aidensfield Arms in the show, in Goathland, which featured in the series, from the show, making the connection even more special. The series was a 1960s-set drama based on Nicholas Rhea’s Constable novels and set in the fictional North York Moors village of Aidensfield.
The new visitor experience dedicated to one of Yorkshire’s most popular TV dramas is set to become a permanent fixture at the museum. It will open on Saturday 29 August and be officially unveiled by David Lonsdale at 1pm, best known for playing David Stockwell in the ITV police drama.
Ian Ashton, Managing Director of the World of James Herriot, said: “I’m delighted that The World of James Herriot has been entrusted with the artefacts of the late Peter N Walker (Nicholas Rhea). We will give Heartbeat fans a permanent, secure location where their memories can be shared alongside All Creatures Great and Small fans, many of whom love both TV series.”
Sarah Walker, daughter of Nicholas Rhea, added: “Alf Wight (or James Herriot) was our local vet and asked Dad, who’d had a few crime books published, for advice on an idea for some stories about life as a country vet. We are thrilled as a family to be working with The World of James Herriot to preserve my dad’s legacy alongside the great work they have already done for James Herriot.”
