Found in one of England’s most impressive national parks, Peak District, the Heights of Abraham are famous cable cars that take you to the summit of Masson Hill passing over Derwent Valley’s rivers, roads and railways. It offers some of the most incredible panoramic views ever.
Once at the summit, you can learn all about Derbyshire’s oldest tourist attraction (yes, it’s not in Yorkshire, but is is bloody beautiful). I mean come one. When your day starts by taking a flight up the famous cable cars, you know you’re in for a fantastic day. The journey takes you 554ft upwards towards the summit.
The popular tourist spot, gets its name from the Plains of Abraham in Canada, which it is said that they share a resemblance.
But, what is there to do at the Heights of Abraham?
As well as the fantastic cable cars you can also enjoy show caverns, breathtaking summit walks where you’ll come across willow sculptures and much more. The 60-acre estate first opened in 1787 and has been welcoming visitors ever since. It has links to the industrial revolution, and has enjoyed visits from royalty and also has a rich mining history.
If the 360 degrees views aren’t enough for you, then don’t waste anytime learning the whole 235-year story about the Heights to learn and you can enjoy the two different guided tours through the underground illuminated caverns.

You’ll learn about the hidden world beneath in the Great Masson Cavern, head 1/3 of a mile underground into the hillside. You’ll take in the cavern scenery by the light of a single miner’s candle and then be mesmorised at the entire cavern as its illuminated in a wash of colour.
Also, the Great Rutland Cavern teaches you all about the lead mining family and roles within the family rom the 17th century.
Above ground there are three exhibitions that delve deeper into the 60-acre estate, visit the Vista restaurant where you can enjoy the unique experience of enjoying a meal 1,111ft above sea level. Enjoy the exclusive Vista balcony gives views for miles across the valley whilst you sup on local ales and gins with your meal.
How long do you need at Heights of Abraham?
It’s advised that you give yourself 3-5 hours at the summit to explore. With so much to do, that’s no surprise. You are free to explore at your own leisure and can simply enjoy your return journey once you’ve had your fun.
