Older doesn’t always mean better, but when it comes to farm shops Hinchcliffe’s Farm Shop in West Yorkshire is hard to beat. And, as the oldest farm shop in Britain, it’s no surprise.
Set up in Yorkshire back in 1929 by Allen Hinchcliffe, whose aim was to create field-to-fork food that included sustainable farming methods and animal welfare – something that has continued throughout Hinchcliffe’s 90-year life span.

The family still pride itself on offering beef that has been with us from pasture to plate to this day. They pride themselves on creating delicious food and having something for everyone. Whether you choose to make a visit to the farm shop or dine in their restaurant you can expect local Yorkshire produce, and meats from their in-house butchers that features Hinchcliffe’s home-reared beef.

The farm shop which has an array of fruit and veg, along with a bakery, deli, beer & wine section and much much more has become a staple of many in the local area near Huddersfield.

His son Charles Robert Hinchcliffe still helps around on the Netherton farm today. The farm shop offers customers top-quality meat, sausages and pork pies along with pork pies all with service with a smile. The beef is reared and grazed in the surrounding area as their farm-fresh eggs also hold an accolade.

Hinchcliffe’s is also home to the first independently controlled rearing unit in Great Britain. What started as a hobby by Charles’ two sons Robert and Sam and son-in-law Leslie Hirst became so much more as in the early 1960s Hinchcliffe’s egg production became the first independently controlled rearing unit in Great Britain.

But the story of Britain’s oldest farm shop is not all record-breaking happiness. In 2010, Hinchcliffe’s farm shop, butchery, restaurant, Greenhouse and office were all destroyed in a fire that ripped through the farm. Luckily, they managed to save most of the animals on the site.
And, from that they went from Britain’s oldest farm shop to Britain’s newest farm shop, opening the farm shop 8 years after the blaze burnt down the original. The new build has all that the family held dear and much more.
