John Savident, Coronation Streets’ Fred Elliott, Has Died Aged 86

John Savident, known for his role as Fred Elliott in Coronation Street, has died aged 86, it’s been announced. Known for his booming voice, he played the popular butcher gracing the Manchester-based streets for years.

His death was announced via his agent to the PA news agency saying: “We are sad to announce the death of the actor John Savident who died on Wednesday. “He was a much-loved husband and father of two and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

The 86-year-old joined the cast of the popular Northern soad back in 1994 and quickly became one of the soap’s most iconic characters due to his big poersonality and load booming voice.

Popular storylines included his three failed marriages and several failed proposals as well as his secret son, Ashley Peacock, played by Steven Arnold, who arrived on the show with the two creating a bond working at the butchers together.

Fred Elliot event created a catchphrase for the pair saying “I say, I say, our Ashely…”

Savident’s character was kiled off back in 2006 when he suffered a stroke on the day he was supposed to marry Bev Unwin, played by Susie Blake.

Tributes have been pouring in for the much loved actor who brought a little joy into our living rooms each night.
