Met Office Reveals Chances Of Seeing Northern Lights Tonight

After a stunning display of the Northern Lights last night, which proved you don’t have to go all the way to the Nordics for a glimpse of that colourful spectacle. Last night, many people across Yorkshire and the UK were able to get a shot of the incredible light creation by using their mobile phones.

The stunning colours, also known as the aurora borealis, are a product of solar activity and are caused by charged particles in the solar wind interacting with molecules in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. They were in full display for all to see last night.

Although, last night was the peak of the light display there is a possibility of them appearing tonight between 10pm and 11pm, according to the Met Office. The chances are significantly reduced but the forecast says: “The chances of aurora remain initially, though gradually easing through October 11, becoming increasingly confined to far northern geomagnetic latitudes by October 13,” Yorkshire Live reports.

How to spot the Northern Lights…

Whilst there is a chance to see the Northern Lights over the next few days there is no guarantee. Cloudy conditions and light pollution can affect visibility.

What you need is dark skies and a clear night to really get the most incredible sighting. So, if you’re looking to get a great glimpse you need to head out of the city or head to higher ground to catch a glimpse.
