After a fantastic first series, Netflix spy thriller, Black Doves, starring Happy Valley’s Sarah Lancashire and Kiera Knightley is back for a second series. And, if that wasn’t exciting enough, Lancashire, who’s iconic character Catherine Caewood sent us on an emotional roller coaster in the hit BBC show, is said to play a bigger role in the new series as she reprises her role as spymaster, Reed.
The Netflix series follows Helen Webb, played by Knightley, a professional spy, who had been passing on political secrets from her politician husband to an organisation knowns as the Black Doves. Her spymaster in series one was Lancashire’s Reed character. And, things are about to get more ‘exciting’ shall we say as her standing in the Black Doves is under threat.
Series two of Black Doves will see Kiera Knightley’s Helen Webb conitnue to bretray her nation’s secrets to the Black Doves, as Husband Wallace is preparing to become Prime Minister, which means her path has become even more dangerous.
Helen’s best friend Sam Young, played by Paddington’s Ben Whishaw, has returned to help her navigate the spy world. The Netflix’s official synopsis for the new series reads: “As they search for answers, loyalties are weaponized, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything.” Sam and Helen’s mission will lead them back to old friends and enemies and delve into dark decisions and paniful sacrifices of their pasts.
Writer, creator, and executive producer Joe Barton told Netflix of the new instalment: “I couldn’t be more excited to delve back into the world of our murderous little spy family. To have so many [members] of our amazing cast returning and also being able to add some of my absolute favourite actors into the mix is such a great joy. Downing Street will never be the same.”
The series 1 finale also set Reed up for a big part in the second instalment thanks to another plot detail. You might remember that series 1 ended with Reed having a glass of fizz with Helen and Wallace’s nanny Marie, who had in fact been spying on them the whole time. The question is, what exactly are they plotting? And who really has Reed’s loyalty?
There is now official date for the Netflix spy thriller Black Doves series 2, but it will come towards the back end of 2026. if you’ve not caught the first series chack it on here.
