Yorkshire is the country’s biggest county, which has a range of factors that pull visitors in each year. From the sandy stretches of beach to the fantastic hikes on offer throughout its National Parks. But did you also know it’s a foodie paradise (if you’ve followed us for a while, you probably do know this).
You would be forgiven for thinking that Yorkshire is just fish & chips by the sea and the home of Yorkshire puds. And, whilst it definitely is those things, it’s also home to some fantastic places to eat, so much so that it, North Yorkshire more specifically, has been named best for a “foodie break” for 2024.
It received the award from Condé Nast Traveller, who recommended the region for its “cluster of exciting places to stay and eat”.
Focusing on the North York Moors the travel mag highlights a range of stunning spots to eat. One such place is Myse, in quaint village of Hovingham. It says “in the Howardian hills from self-starting chef Josh Overington and his sommelier wife Victoria. Take your pick of which to bed down in, but you’ll want to eat at them all.”
You can’t talk about the North York Moors food spots without mentioning Tommy Banks’ much-loved Black Swan, which was once named best restaurant in the UK and 4th best restaurant in the world, thanks to its “farm-to-table tasting menu”.
One it mentions that we’ve tried for ourselves is Tommy Banks’ newer pub and restaurant, The Abbey Inn, which overlooks the Byland Abbey.
If you’re going to visit The Abbey Inn, we highly recommend the burger. It was one of the best things we’ve ever put in our mouths. Juicy and succulent. It’s Tommy doing what he does best. Taken a classic and elevating it to good of the gods. And you can enjoy it a renovated inn with all the touches you’d expect with flagstone floors, a quaking bar and friendly staff.
Sometimes these list my travel mags miss the mark, but with these choices we think Condé Nast Traveller has hit the nail on the head. Obviously they can’t mention all the great spots to eat in the North York Moors, but you’ll struggle to find a bad meal in our eyes.
