This year marks the 50th Anniversary Gala for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and they’ve anounced the first two steam trains set to visit the NYMR.
The celebration is set to take place from July 21st through to 24th September 2023, the 50th Anniversary Gala will see LNER A4 No. 60007 otherwise known as Sir Nigel Gresley return to the railway for the first time since being painted BR Blue Livery.
Along with Sir Nigel Gresley locomotive is BR 9F No. 92214 – which is visiting thanks to the Great Central Railway and the David Clarke Railway Trust.
The Sir Nigel Gresley, named after one of Britain’s most famous steam locomotive engineers of the same name, was out of action for seven years, but returned to North York Moors last October.
The two visiting engines will join the usual NYMR fleey which is made up up BR 9F No. 92134, SR Schools No. 926 ‘Repton’, LMS Black 5 No. 5428 ‘Eric Treacy’, No. 8 ‘Lucie’, BR Standard 4 No. 80136, J27 No. 65894 and No. 29 ‘Peggy’.

Chris Price, Chief Executive Officer at NYMR, said: “The annual Steam Gala is one of the most exciting events of the year. This year is an extra special one as it’s our 50th anniversary, and we have the pleasure of welcoming four visiting locomotives – including iconic locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley.
“With so much to see over the four days, it’s not a surprise that tickets are always so high in demand. We’re very much looking forward to seeing the locos be enjoyed by so many again in September.”
