Winter has been a cold one, and the coast has seen more than a dusting of snow over the past month. So staying at home and cosying up under a blanket might be the plan for most folk — that is, until you see the warming hot chocolates on offer at Scarborough South Bay’s newest addition, Caffè Royale, which are sure to break any New Year’s resolutions.
Previously a Scarborough South Bay amusement arcade, the space has been transformed into a cool coffee shop serving an array of tempting offerings, from stuffed bagels and pastries to indulgent hot chocolates and your favourite caffeine hit. Located on the north side of Sandside, overlooking the harbour to the south and southeast, it’s an exciting new addition to the seaside town.
We ventured to the new café after a brisk dog walk along the beach over the weekend and were pleasantly surprised by what was on offer. The place is very dog-friendly, even providing a pup cup — which our hungry lab happily obliged, no questions asked. The menu is ideal for those looking for a light bite after a walk, which suited us perfectly.
We were there for one thing, though: the calorific hot chocolates to warm us up after the cold sea breeze had battered our faces as we braved the weather. There’s a great variety to choose from, and we loved poring over the menu, trying to decide which to go for.
We opted for the s’mores hot chocolate and the cinnamon roll–topped hot chocolate. Both arrived looking picture-perfect and were wonderfully decadent — the perfect post-walk treat. Other flavours include a non-alcoholic Baileys Irish Cream and a Black Forest cherry hot chocolate.
