If you’re looking for a pub walk with spectacular views and plenty of Yorkshire charm, it doesn’t get much better than the heather-clad moorland above the popular market town of Ilkley.
Ilkley Moor is one of Yorkshire’s most iconic landscapes, with vast expanses of wild heather, rugged rocks and far-reaching views across the Wharfe Valley. In late summer, the moors are transformed into a sea of purple as the heather blooms, making it one of the most beautiful places in the county for a walk. Just don’t forget a jacket – it can get seriously windy up there. “Heathcliff, Heathcliff!”
This easy circular walk starts and finishes at the Cow & Calf Hotel, perched on the edge of the moor and boasting incredible views over the surrounding countryside. From here, you’ll head out onto Ilkley Moor, taking in some of its most famous landmarks, including the striking Cow and Calf Rocks and the peaceful Tarn, an impressive lake nestled among the moorland.
At just over three miles long, the route is relatively short and suitable for most abilities, making it perfect for a leisurely afternoon stroll. Despite its modest distance, there’s plenty to enjoy along the way, from dramatic rock formations and open landscapes to the sense of tranquillity that comes with being high above the town.
One of the highlights of the walk is undoubtedly the Tarn. Surrounded by moorland and often reflecting the ever-changing Yorkshire skies, it’s a lovely spot to pause and soak up the scenery before continuing your route.
This relaxed circular walk starts at the Cow and Calf car park and takes in some of Ilkley Moor’s highlights, including Rocky Valley, White Wells and the picturesque Ilkley Tarn. Along the way, you’ll wander through open moorland, pass streams and enjoy beautiful hillside lakes, with plenty of opportunities to extend the route if you fancy going further. White Wells is particularly fascinating, as Ilkley was once famed as a Victorian spa town, and even Charles Darwin is said to have taken a dip in the plunge pool here.
And, of course, no pub walk would be complete without a well-earned drink at the end. After exploring the moors, you can head back to the Cow & Calf Hotel and reward yourself with a pint or bite to eat while enjoying some of the best views in West Yorkshire.
