Yorkshire Dales walks? Loads of ’em. All as good as each other. Holding secrets that are just waiting to be discovered and one of the beautiful walks has been featured in the Independent’s best walks for summer 2023.
Located as part of the famous 268-mile Pennine Way, the newspaper complimented the two features that make up this part of the walk. Writing about the 14-mile walk they said: “You’ll come across the 80-metre limestone cliff of Malham Cove early in the journey, climbing it (via steps) and enjoying views of the surrounding hills before moving on to Malham Tarn, one of the highest lakes in England.”
The Malham to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire walk that features in the newspaper’s list is a 14-mile walk that could be completed in day by hardy walkers or split between a weekend.
Describing the walk they said: “You’ll be ascending again before long, as Pen-y-ghent (the shortest of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks at 694m) appears, offering more sweeping views of the surrounding dales. The rest of the route is a merciful downhill trail to Horton-in-Ribblesdale; just reward for the almost 800 metres of ascent.”
Another walk on Yorkshire’s doorstep is the Peak District National Park taking in Derwent and Howden Reservoirs, Peak District.
The Peak District walk takes in the the two scenic reservoirs and is describes as a more “scenic, more relaxing alternative to routels like Mam Tor circular walk.”
The Independent says: “Though it is a 10-mile journey, there is very little climbing and the paths are flat and accessible, while you’ll also get opportunities for wild swimming at Slippery Stones (it’s also a popular circuit for bikes).”
